Polymarket’s $220m stock bets draw SEC & CFTC scrutiny
The CFTC wants to police the boom in stock-linked markets; Wall Street & consumer groups back the SEC.
The hit
More than $220m has been wagered on roughly 31,000 equity-linked markets on Polymarket International through early September. Nearly 60% backed individual stock moves in names like Nvidia, Alphabet, Apple & Tesla, according to the Charlotte Observer. The CFTC maintains it should oversee prediction markets, while traditional financial firms & consumer groups want the SEC to lead. The SEC declined to comment & the CFTC did not respond.
Why it matters
Single-stock contracts are generally treated as security-based swaps under US law, putting them in SEC territory & largely off-limits to retail traders. The vast majority of traders reportedly lose money.
The record
| Total wagered on equity-linked markets | more than $220m |
|---|---|
| Number of equity-linked markets | roughly 31,000 |
| Kalshi’s daily index/KPI markets | around 2,500 |
What happens next
Watch for SEC & CFTC rulemaking following their joint request for public feedback, & whether Congress moves after Senator Adam Schiff’s warnings on securities-law evasion.
