Polymarket flags dozens of midterm bets, at least 2 go to CFTC
Rival Kalshi says it has opened more than 150 investigations & referred over 20 cases to law enforcement.
The hit
Polymarket’s head of global intelligence, Shana Bautista, told NPR her team has investigated dozens of bets on midterm election markets for possible insider trading & manipulation. A new surveillance system now generates hundreds of alerts a day ahead of the vote.
Why it matters
NPR reports the CFTC has done little to police prediction markets, largely leaving the work to the companies. Bautista says crypto trades are rarely fully anonymous, & her team has always been able to potentially identify people behind them. She calls trading on protected information illegal, & former CFTC trial lawyer Jeff Le Riche says such trades “could potentially be a violation” of the law.
The record
| Investigations referred to CFTC | At least 2, per a person familiar with the probes, via NPR |
|---|---|
| Polymarket’s investigations unit | 16 staff, led by Shana Bautista, joined June |
| Kalshi’s enforcement | 150+ investigations opened, 20+ cases referred to law enforcement, per Kalshi |
| Soldier’s Maduro-raid bets | Allegedly staked more than $33,000, won nearly $410,000; charged, pleaded not guilty |
What happens next
Watch for further CFTC referrals & disclosures as the November 3 midterm vote approaches, plus any agency action following its September warning on manipulable “mention markets.”
