69% of Democrats, 61% of GOP oppose election bets
Opposition crosses party lines even as the CFTC pushes federal oversight of Kalshi & Polymarket.
The hit
Most Americans don’t want election outcomes turned into betting markets, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey, conducted 30 September to 5 October across 4,506 adults, found 69% of Democrats & 61% of Republicans opposed prediction-market wagers on elections. Opposition softened for sports betting, where 43% opposed & 29% backed it.
Why it matters
The numbers land as the Trump administration pushes the CFTC for federal regulation of the industry, over state objections. Public resistance to election wagering, even among the president’s own party, complicates that push.
The record
| Democrats opposed to election prediction markets | 69% (Reuters/Ipsos) |
|---|---|
| Republicans opposed to election prediction markets | 61% (Reuters/Ipsos) |
| Opposed to betting on pro sports | 43%, vs 29% in support (Reuters/Ipsos) |
| Poll sample & dates | 4,506 US adults, 30 Sept-5 Oct (Reuters/Ipsos) |
| States opposing CFTC jurisdiction | 39 states & DC filed amicus brief, reported 8 Oct (Cointelegraph) |
What happens next
Watch the jurisdiction fight between the CFTC & state regulators over Kalshi & Polymarket, which states say needs a Supreme Court ruling to resolve.
