Kalshi to probe trades on Trump’s press secretary pick
Zacharia was given roughly a 1% chance before the wagers landed just ahead of her surprise appointment.
The hit
Kalshi is investigating a trio of trades set to return thousands of dollars in profit just before President Trump named Katie Zacharia as his new press secretary, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing a Kalshi spokeswoman. Zacharia was trading at roughly a 1% chance before the wagers landed. Neither the White House nor Kalshi has commented further.
Why it matters
The timing feeds growing unease that people close to the White House are trading on information before it goes public. A White House teleprompter operator was hit with a $65,000 fine over trades on Trump’s speeches, & former congressman George Santos was fined & banned from Kalshi for life for market manipulation.
The record
| Suspicious wagers placed | $19, $74 & $80, hours before Zacharia’s appointment (Reuters) |
|---|---|
| Largest expected payout | more than $4,000 (Reuters) |
| White House staff memo | issued in March, warning against trading on nonpublic information |
What happens next
Watch for Kalshi’s findings on the Zacharia trades & whether the White House issues further guidance to staff on prediction-market trading.
