REGULATION 60-second read

Ohio & Polymarket now suing each other over sports contracts

Published: 1 min read
An empty state regulatory hearing room with rows of vacant chairs & a wooden dais, lit by late afternoon light through tall windows.

Underdog & Polymarket are suing the state instead of complying with Ohio’s cease-&-desist orders.

The hit

Half of the 10 prediction market firms Ohio ordered to stop sports event contracts have now complied. Robinhood, Gemini, Moomoo Financial & Coinbase have agreed to halt new Ohio sports contracts, the Ohio Casino Control Commission told Legal Sports Report.

Why it matters

Ohio’s enforcement push, launched after a Sixth Circuit ruling against Kalshi, is forcing firms to pick a side: comply, sue, or keep talking to regulators. Polymarket’s lawsuit goes further, challenging Ohio’s licensing framework itself as unconstitutional discrimination against interstate commerce.

The record

Cease-&-desist orders sent 10 operators, 2 October (Ohio Casino Control Commission)
Compliance deadline set 16 October (OCCC)
First to comply Plus500US, confirmed 21 October (OCCC)
Coinbase compliance date 13 November (OCCC)
Licensee warning deadline 30 October, letter sent 20 October (OCCC)

What happens next

Watch Coinbase’s 13 November compliance deadline, with Polymarket’s constitutional challenge to Ohio’s licensing rules the one to track.
