Google blocks prediction-market ads in five US states
Google’s policy allows licensed, certified operators to advertise only in locations listed in its location-specifics section.
The hit
Google has folded a prediction-market ad ban into its main advertising policy document, according to newsletter Event Horizon. Operators cannot target ads at Connecticut, Michigan, Nevada, New York or Ohio. Connecticut was added last week; most of the others have been excluded for several months.
Why it matters
All five states have tried to stop prediction markets operating within their borders, & sports event contracts are already unavailable in Michigan & Nevada. Legal fights over the industry’s legitimacy continue in those states.
The record
| States now blocked | Connecticut, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Ohio (Google Ads policy) |
|---|---|
| Latest addition | Connecticut, added last week (Event Horizon) |
| Sports contracts already barred | Michigan & Nevada |
| Policy requirement | Advertisers must hold local financial, commodity & or gaming licences & Google certification |
What happens next
Watch whether more states join Google’s exclusion list as legal challenges to prediction markets continue.
