Andrews stuns South Carolina, blindsiding prediction markets
Andrews, a political novice who lost to Nancy Mace in 2022, becomes South Carolina’s first elected woman senator.
The hit
Prediction markets had priced Darline Graham to hold her South Carolina Senate seat. Democrat Annie Andrews defeated the Republican incumbent on Tuesday, the first Democrat elected to the US Senate from South Carolina since 1998, according to the Associated Press. Graham had been serving as interim senator since her brother Lindsey Graham died earlier this year.
Why it matters
Trump endorsed & campaigned for Graham in the primary, but his backing eroded her support among independents & some Republicans uneasy about a Graham family dynasty. Graham struggled in a primary debate on Taiwan & the South China Sea, admitting “national security is not my thing.” About two-thirds of South Carolina Senate voters said she lacked the right experience, & about 7 in 10 of those doubters backed Andrews, according to the AP Voter Poll.
The record
| Republican Senate win margin in SC since Hollings’ 1998 win | Double digits every race (Associated Press) |
|---|---|
| Republican base support for Darline Graham vs Lindsey Graham in 2020 | About 8 in 10 vs about 9 in 10 (AP VoteCast) |
