Ohio gives 10 prediction-market firms until 16 October to quit
Ohio regulators say the firms must stop offering sports event contracts to state customers.
The hit
The Ohio Casino Control Commission has sent cease-&-desist notices to 10 prediction-market operators, demanding they stop offering sports event contracts to Ohio customers. The list includes Coinbase, Gemini Titan, Moomoo Financial, Novig, Plus500US, Polymarket, Prophet X, Robinhood, Underdog & Webull Financial, according to the regulator. Kalshi is not on the list because it already faces separate litigation with the OCCC.
Why it matters
Ohio says sports event contracts are gambling under state law, meaning operators must comply with its sports gaming requirements. Ohio says these wagers lack the protections its sports-gaming rules require, including licensing & age verification. The companies now face a choice: comply with Ohio’s rules or fight the order in court, as Kalshi has done. A Sixth Circuit ruling rejected Kalshi’s bid to block Ohio & Tennessee enforcement, weakening the federal-law defence operators have relied on.
The record
| Response deadline | 16 October 2026 (OCCC) |
|---|---|
| Operators named | 10, including Robinhood, Coinbase & Polymarket (OCCC) |
| Key precedent | Sixth Circuit rejected Kalshi’s bid to block Ohio & Tennessee enforcement |
| Political backing | Governor Mike DeWine calls prediction markets “really gambling, nothing more” |
What happens next
The 10 operators must respond to the OCCC by the deadline. Their decisions on compliance or legal challenge will shape the next phase of Ohio’s prediction-market crackdown.
