Kalshi traders price 2027 US recession at record-low 20%
Polymarket’s comparable contracts traded as high as the mid-30s over the same period, according to Cryptobriefing.
The hit
Kalshi’s 2027 US recession contract hit an all-time low of 20% on 26 September 2026, according to the platform. The decline tracks with stronger GDP prints & a resilient labour market, Cryptobriefing reports.
Why it matters
The contract pays out only on two straight quarters of negative GDP growth as measured by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, a narrower, more mechanical trigger than the National Bureau of Economic Research’s traditional recession call. That means traders are pricing a narrow, mechanical trigger, not the broader sense of a downturn households might feel. A short technical dip in GDP could even trigger the contract without the NBER ever declaring a recession.
The record
| Kalshi recession price | 20% record low, posted 26 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| 2026 peak odds | more than 30% to 50% earlier in the year |
| Polymarket comparable contracts | low-to-mid 20s to mid-30s in mid-to-late 2026 |
| Contract window | Q4 2026 through Q4 2027, resolved by Bureau of Economic Analysis data |
| Kalshi founded | 2018 by CEO Tarek Mansour & COO Luana Lopes Lara |
What happens next
The next Bureau of Economic Analysis GDP releases feed directly into the contract’s resolution, meaning each quarterly print could shift the price quickly.
